Carver of the Christian sky
Documentary, 25 minutes

This film is a portrait of a carver living in an ancient school in the middle of a village that used to be Dobrá Voda in Šumava. A very important pilgrimage spot, a rich German village in the past, it was unoccupied after the war, German inhabitants were chased away and the village became part of the prohibited frontier area. The Army who had a garrison here destroyed the village completely, most of the houses as well as crosses and tombstones of the cemetery. Only the church, vicarage and school were conserved, devastated by the army. The school was bought by Mr. and Mrs. Tesařovi at the beginning of the nineties and reconstructed.

Michal Tesař studies as theologian, and worked as at geological researches. In the caravans where he lived he started carving small wooden sculptures that have stayed his main creative activity. Besides statues of Saints, he has created three conciliation crosses at local cemeteries in villages that were originally completely German, these are crosses with the images of Saints and parts of prayer in Czech and German.

Thus the film about a carver linked top the traditional creation of pilgrimage statues of Saints takes in a bit of the attempts of a Czech-German conciliation.
