Nativity scenes at Ústí nad Orlicí

Ústí nad Orlicí is already for almost two hundred years one of the most famous traditional Czech centres for the production of unique dimensional Nativity scenes with paper, hand-painted figurines. The document captures the specific regional features of the Nativity scenes from the Ústí nad Orlicí region (the peculiarities of their construction, specific parts and iconography moments as well as all the forms of the Nativity scenes from this area according to the devotional calendar: Christmas, the three Magi, Candlemas and passion), technique for production of the Nativity scene figurines and traditional method for construction of the Nativity scenes in some households.

The document centres on the creations of the last three contemporary painters (J. Herain, J. Procházka, J. Knapovský) that are involved in the production of Nativity scenes. Based on the motive of their creations and inspiration, the film tries to capture the procedure of hand-over of the production of the Nativity scenes and their traditional local symbols from generation to generation as well as the differences in the works of the contemporary authors, who oscillate from consistent copying of traditional works, unique and inventive painting that adheres to all the essential traditional features to own artistic expression.
